ZUIJDERWIJK / VERGOUWE
Zuijderwijk/Vergouwe both studied photography at the Academy of Arts St.Joost in Breda (NL). In 2016 the have been granted by the Dutch Mondriaan Foundation with a 4-year Grant for Proven Talent. Their work has been published in various Dutch magazines, was exhibited national and internationally and is owned in private collections.
For their latest series ‘Mapping’ Zuijderwijk/Vergouwe traveled this year to the coast of Sweden, Norway, Ireland and Scotland to study different rock formations. They spend most of their time on Mull and Iona, two of the inner Hebrides islands at the West coast of Scotland. These volcanic islands expose an amazing geological history.
Zuijderwijk/Vergouwe: “A specific interest of ours is projections. Figuratively in the sense that aspects like context, ideas, and history will modify the way we experience our environment and eventually defines our relation with the landscape. But also literally, when projections are used to understand and organize the landscape. In our latest series ‘Mapping’ we used a laser pen to project lines on landscapes. Changing the angle of laser will result in another ‘scan’ of the same landscape. These ‘scans’ reveal some of the many faces of the landscape.” For this exhibition we curated 12 images out of the full collection. Looking ahead to 2019 Zuijderwijk/Vergouwe and …,staat will co-publish the namesake book with the full collection of the ‘Mapping’ series. The book is available for pre-order.
